We understand that losing your vehicle keys or not having them due to various circumstances can be disheartening. Whether the keys are lost, with an ex-spouse, or damaged, rest assured that Gear Up Giving can still help you donate your car. In most cases, we can manage the donation process without needing the keys!
When you donate a vehicle without keys, the logistics involve a flatbed tow truck to safely transport your car. We will also assist you in ordering a duplicate key if necessary. Remember, you just need to provide the title in your name, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and ensure that there's access for our tow truck. The towing cost is completely covered—there’s no out-of-pocket expense for you!
How to make it happen
Check Title Ownership
Make sure the vehicle title is in your name. A clean title is crucial for donation. If inherited, confirm that all necessary estate paperwork is complete.
Provide VIN
Locate the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which is essential for the donation process. This allows us to verify the vehicle's details and can help in ordering duplicate keys if needed.
Prepare for Pickup
Ensure there’s a clear path for the flatbed tow truck to reach your vehicle. Check for any obstacles such as gates or tight spaces that may hinder the towing process.
Arrange for Duplicate Keys
If the vehicle has an immobilizer chip and requires a dealer-programmed key, contact a dealer with your VIN and title proof to arrange a duplicate key before pickup.
Schedule Donation Pickup
Once you have the title, VIN, and pathway arranged, contact Gear Up Giving to schedule your vehicle's donation. Our team will guide you through the final steps.
Common gotchas
Missing Title
Tip: If you don’t have the title, obtaining a duplicate title from the DMV can take time. Start this process early to avoid delays.
Obstructed Path
Tip: Ensure the area around your vehicle is clear for the flatbed. This prevents delays and makes the pickup process smoother.
Key Programming
Tip: Vehicle models with immobilizer chips may require programming at the dealership. Be sure to inquire about this when ordering a duplicate key.
If this path doesn't fit
If donating your vehicle isn’t feasible due to the lack of keys, you may consider selling it for parts or contacting local salvage yards. They can often take vehicles without keys and handle the necessary paperwork for you.
Chicago DMV specifics
In Illinois, you will need to release any liens and possibly surrender your license plates during the donation process. Check with your local DMV regarding state-specific paperwork, as requirements may vary. Make sure to have a valid ID and the vehicle title, as well as any other documentation they may require.
